WELCOME

The best advice I can give is from a talk by Elder Oaks: ”Last year a church member sent me a suggestion that someone prepare a book containing all General Authority interpretations of all verses in the scriptures. I replied that I thought this was not a good idea…. What we are seeking to accomplish… is not to magnify the standing of the prophets but to elevate the spirituality of our rank and file members. Like Moses, we declare, ‘would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!’ (Numbers 11:29). We encourage everyone to study the scriptures prayerfully and seek personal revelation to know the meaning for themselves.” (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “Scripture Reading and Revelation”, BYU Studies Academy Meeting, January 29, 1993)

Come Follow Me Study Guide-My way of Study

I was so excited to pick up a study guide for the new year and make it my own.
The Ward gave each family one but I could not wait so bought my own. The one from the Ward went to my wife and then I bought another one for my 10 year old to have as her own to mark up, write in and be hers as we study this next year.
I like to color and highlight and add notes more than the space in the book allows.
So........

I bought a nice binder-briefcase note book at the local thrift store for $2.

I then cut the binding off the manual and added that to the loose leaf portion
I added in a note pad at the back to take notes. A cardboard piece in front, so no matter what side of the page I am on I have a solid surface to write on.

I Highlight items I need to think on.

I add a sticker to questions that are asked and then put my answers on a page in the back of each lesson

I tape in thoughts from General Authorities I have on the scriptures listed, that I have gathered from resources that are listed in a previous post.

The idea behind this is so where ever I go I can have my study items with me. I have the manual, note paper, a blue back copy of the New Testament, Markers, crayons, post it notes, everything I need

I also take what I have gathered and add the notes, thoughts to my online copy at LDS.org. You simply highlight the scripture or part of text you want and add a note.
This way I have it on my phone, or tablet no matter where I am and can help in discussions or personal review when I find I have a few minutes.

Your ideas and comments are welcome....let us know how you plan to study this next year.

Resources for study

I have several resources I use as I study.
The following web sites are a great help in finding statements made about passages of scripture by the General Authorities:
https://www.gospeldoctrine.com/
https://scriptures.byu.edu/

LDS.org has a lot of information buried inside it. The Seminary Home Study manuals have a wealth of information.
BYUTV has a scripture discussion show that has gone in depth on all the standard works that I enjoy as well.

I also read a lot and as I find a passage in a book I mark it, then flag it so I can later enter it into my document called: Thoughts I have read.
As you can see I am a bit behind in moving these from the books to on line.

Name Change

With the new announcements and direction from Pres Nelson I think I need to change the title of this blog.
I do not want to lose anyone but think I need to be obedient.
Thoughts on the changed name is simply to use ...scripturemarking.blogspot.com

Conference Journal

I decided to try a new approach to study General Conference.
I am not the artistic type no matter how much I want to be. But I found something that works for me.
I listened to Conference and took notes. After the talks were published on LDS.org and in my Gospel Library I went in and highlighted parts and made more notes.
I then took the highlighted sections and transferred them to a small notebook I bought just for this.
Now since I am not artistic I bought a set of stencils to help add shapes and flare.
I then put in a table of contents with speaker name, talk title from LDS.org and page # in my little book.
After it was all done I then took the Ensign and copied the topic list into the back of my book and added my page numbers to it so I can find items more easily.
I am pretty happy with the result and have used it a lot since it was created.
When I go to a meeting and they say we are going to discuss so and so talk I have my notes.
As I prepare my Youth Sunday School lesson I can look at the topic section and pull the latest word from the leaders of the Church to add to the lesson.

President Nelson Study Challenge

Well I have decided to take on President Nelson Study challenge of going through the scriptures on Jesus Christ.
I am going to start with the Book of Mormon.
I did start with a topic that is not in the Topical Guide. That of the names of Christ.

I got a blue hard back copy and using a yellow crayon marker and a couple of ball point pens have started.
I take the red pen and underline the name then color the verse then with a black pen wrote in the margin Name of:

As I move to other topics I will use the same yellow crayon and black margin pen but change the color of key verse pen I use.

This is going to be exciting and I will share as I go.

Holy Ghost

Came across this thought as I was studying Agency and the Atonemnet. Gonna have to think about this for awhile I think

For example, we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost following our baptism. The full benefit of having the Holy Ghost as a companion cannot be realized until after our resurrection, but if we choose to disobey the Holy Ghost and commit sin, we lose His influence in our lives.

Swaddling Clothes and Mary's Prep

I totally stole this from my wife Instagram post she did today.
I was so impressed with her insight.

  • nbradforI decided for the month of Dec I wanted to focus on learning more about the life of Jesus Christ. I came across a wonderful plan from @leslie_kawai where she has created a 30 day study guide to “Walk with Christ”. I am on day 6 and am loving this study. Today in particular was to study the birth of Christ. What I learned today has really touched my heart. When we learn of Christ’s birth we know that he was wrapped in swaddling bands. Honestly I never gave much thought as to what that was (it I’m being really honest, I just assumed it was something that they just had in hand). Today I learned that swaddling bands were special bands embroidered with symbols specific to the family lineage and used to wrap a bride and grooms hands under a wedding canopy. Then those swaddling bands were put away for use when the first son is born. What this tells me is that Mary lovingly prepared these bands and knowing she would likely give birth while they were away from home made sure to bring them on the trip to Bethlehem. They obviously couldn’t take much on their journey but she made sure to take what was needed to care for her newborn child, the Savior Jesus Christ. What an example Mary is of being prepared for the arrival of the Lord. How can I be like Mary and be prepared for that day when the Lord comes again?  #30daywalkwithChrist #lighttheworld
